Have you ever tried to unsubscribe from a newsletter and had to go through five screens, log in again, and fill out a survey? Or have you reached the end of an online checkout only to discover hidden fees that appeared out of nowhere?

If you've ever felt like a website or app was manipulating you into doing something you didn't want to, you've likely encountered a dark pattern.

What Exactly Are "Dark Patterns"?

A "dark pattern" is a user interface (UI/UX) design technique intentionally crafted to trick users into performing actions they otherwise wouldn't. The goal is usually a short-term win for the company: an extra sale, an unwanted subscription, or gathering personal data.

The problem? In the long run, these techniques destroy trust and drive away loyal customers.

Why Are They a Problem for Your Business?

It might seem like a good idea to "help" a customer add extra insurance to their cart. But when the customer realizes they were tricked, the result is catastrophic:

  • ▶Loss of Trust: The customer will feel deceived and will never buy from you again.
  • ▶Negative Reputation: They will tell their friends and leave negative reviews.
  • ▶Lower Conversion Rates: Users are becoming more educated and recognize these tricks, leading to higher cart abandonment.

5 Common Examples of Dark Patterns (and How to Avoid Them)

1. Roach Motel

What it is: It's very easy to get into a situation (like a subscription) and almost impossible to get out. The "Unsubscribe" button is hidden in the footer, written in light grey on a white background.

The Ethical Alternative: The cancellation process must be as simple as the sign-up process. One click, clear and visible.

2. Sneak into Basket

What it is: The website automatically adds extra products or services to your shopping cart, hoping you won't notice.

The Ethical Alternative: Offer extra products as clear options (with checkboxes left unchecked by default) before checkout.

3. Confirmshaming

What it is: The website makes you feel guilty for refusing an offer.
